The most important thing you can do to improve you Treo experiance is get Push
email. It will save time and your inbox will always be the same whether you
choose to use your Treo, desktop or webmail.

There are 2 email "protocols" that allow for Push: IMAP and Exchange.

An Exchange server email account will cost $7 a month but you can use Versamail
very effectively with it. IMAP service can be had for as little as a one time
$15 setup fee from Fastmail. For true Push IMAP on the Treo, your only option
is Chattermail. Though Chattermail has been "borged" into Palm the Chattermail
forums are very alive and customer service responds within hours. Chattermail
is one time $40. The draw back to the Chattermail IMAP option is that you will
likely need an extended battery. I have 3600 mAh and use the Treo all day and
get about 16-18hrs.

The other advantage to Exchange is that you contacts appointments auto sync
with Outlook, requiring no Hotsync for these items.

If you're like me, and can't bear to pay a monthly recurring fee for email and
want to use an extended battery, Chattermail with IMAP is great. If the
advantage of no extra power drain, free email client (Versamail), and "live"
contacts and appoinments are worth $7 a month, I'd go for an Exchange server
email account with 1&1.

POP for now. IMAP is an option that I plan on using later, when my
desktop mail client gets that added to its feature set.

Also, SSL is a (personal) requirement. (Hence the $50 version of
 Snapper.)
