With chateremail, I'll have to leave the gprs connection on, right? It's actually set to check for mails every few minutes.

All you need is an IMAP client. As the last 2 days worth of email exchanges on this list have pointed out, gmail now supports IMAP, so if it also supports IDLE you'll be able to get push email on Chatter.
