Hi Carl,

I'm not an expert on these things, but Windows Mobile has come a long way since
WinCE, I think everyone would accept that. And does it really matter that
today's 4-year-old (or more) PalmOS is more "mature" then a 4-year old WinCE
device??? No, because you're not comparing competing products. Compare
today's 755P and Centro to the 700wx (or the Mogul, the HTC Touch, TyTNII, etc.
- that's another thing about WM, you have a selection of different devices and
manufacturers to go to get the best device for you).

I forgot I can also play Flash on my WM Treo which you can't do on PalmOS. I
even have a browser that works similar to the way the iPhone's browser works.
PalmOS doesn't have support for stereo Bluetooth (A2DP) whereas WM6 does. WM5
and 6 has OS-level support for GPS devices. I'm sure there are a lot of other
things it supports built into the OS which simply weren't around 4+ years ago
when the last version of PalmOS was minted. Palm has done a decent job of
adding on support for some of these, but because these are add-ons, they don't
always work as reliably as they should.

As far as applications, have you actually looked at what's out there for WM?
Just as an example, I have seen at least 4 IM clients, maybe more. This
definitely rivals what is available for Palm. Perhaps there are only 6,000
apps available to Palm's 10,000 apps, but just the sheer number doesn't mean
much, it's what those available are. All the major apps I've had on Palm have
WM versions, including Pocket Quicken, PDANet, Agendus, etc. There are also
plenty of free useful apps for WM of which I've downloaded and have been using.
I've not so far every come across the thought that I was somehow limited in my
choices with WMever thought that I couldn't get a quality piece of software.

When I say the software market for PalmOS is declining I am mainly going by
what has been posted here from time to time about how a lot of developers have
given up on the OS as they aren't getting the amount of support from Palm as
they used to. The stand-alone PDA market has been declining and so the
PalmOS's main market right now is the PalmOS Treos. Has that marketshare been
growing? I don't know. But if you compare this to MS's support for
third-party developers, it's not hard to see why some may be devoting more
time, plus the fact that it is an OS which is coming out with new versions
every year or two.

Carl, your loyalty is admerable, but I'm more of a pragmatist. I enjoyed my
PalmOS experience for a few years, but I have to make the most logical decision
that works for me. WM has matured beyond the capabilities of the PalmOS and
the PalmOS's future is more hazy then that of WM. I sacrificed a bit of a
learning curve and having to repurchase some applications in order to get rid
of some of the risk factor in staying with the PalmOS, as well as gain added
functionality will not be in the PalmOS for at least another year, maybe more...

Subject: RE: [Treo] 755P more stable than 700P or should I go Windows?

I agree that basic Smartphone functions like PIM apps, SMS, email and such are
easy enough on either a Palm OS or Windows Treo. The Palm OS Treo will take
less steps to do the same. I always here that Windows is preferred for Outlook
and Office user, of course Palm OS handles these all without a hassle.

The separating thing for me is the 3rd party apps. Palm OS has way more usuable
apps of which many are free.

People keep talking about the declining Palm OS, which by the way can still do
more than the newer versions of the competing OSs. It not like comparing
Windows 3.0 to Windows Vista, the Palm OS is still powerful today.

Stories and podcasts I did years ago still are relevent and useful for new Palm
OS users today. The OS is mature, not old or declining in function or
usefulness. It may be mature, but is as strong and quick as it was when it was
a new OS. Can we say that about WinCE? No. Can a new device using WinCE make it
in today's mobile arena? Not as well, my friend. My vote is for the Palm OS, I
say get a Centro or Treo 755p.

Thanks,
I'll see you on the web!
