I think you're right on the mark there. I'm usually unlikely to respond to one of those messages that rambles on so that by the time I finish it I have no clue what the writer is requesting. More so on this list than, say, on the forums where you can request clarification without totally losing structure or too much time.
I find I don't respond at all if I don't know what the message is asking for because I have never heard of the issue, or have no experience with it. By the same token, I find myself getting annoyed with those people who a) feel compelled to respond to every message whether they are contributing to the discussion or not, b) give incorrect feedback, c) reply with something that really has nothing to do with the actual question at hand, or worse d) reply in language/grammar/typing/spelling so poor that you wonder how this person came into possession of any kind of input device at all, be it a Treo or a computer keyboard!
