The forthcoming Treo 800w, based on Windows Mobile 6.1, may be the answer for you. I'm watching it very closely.

I've been more than happy with my Treo 650, but it is getting a bit long in the (blue)tooth. I was seduced when one of my patients came in with an HTC Tytn II (aka ATT Tilt, but the Tytn is the HTC version, more features and better software than what ATT buys for the Tilt version), and showed me ATT 3G data. I did not even know the had fast data available, and I had to have it, even though I had a hunch that Windows was going to be a pain. Now 2 months into this, I am daily tempted to go back to my 650. While the tilt is an amazing hardware package, including a beautiful touch screen, a crappy keyboard, gps, wifi, quad band gsm, hsdpa data, in a package that is the same size and weight as the 650 (without the antenna...just the body of it), the software really lets it down. As ATT ships it, it is practically unusable. Just awkward. Maybe there is a learning curve, but it is just nowhere near as elegant as the dead in the water palm os. Still, this doesn't stop me, because Palm is dead in the water. If they ever do get around to releasing a new OS, who knows if it will have the interface elegance we are used to. I would guess not. At any rate, I have been hacking, reading, installing, resetting, for way too many hours to make any sense... and it still is not as usable as the 650. Granted, it does MANY things better, but for just plain usability...being able to use it without much thought... it suffers from what Windows suffers from...trying to be all things to all people, it is just too complex. Can it be customized to be acceptable? Well, yeah, I guess I am almost there...but that simply means I have decided which features to emphasize, and put them front and center. If I need to go into the OS for some utility, I am digging through illogical menus, trying to find where some crazy function is buried...just like on my PC. The, pardon the word, APPLE, didn't fall far from the tree! If anyone else has the urge to go down this road, there is a tremendous resource at http://www.xda-developers.com/ , both the forum and the wiki...it was there that I learned how to flash the rom so it has the features that HTC build in, but ATT strips out. And, like this list, one can learn what software, often freeware, is good. Still in all, it has been a real PIA, and I am still not really content. ....just in case anyone wants to know. Mike
