Why do you assume that?
Unlocked means it will run on any GSM carrier's SIM.
On the other hand, if it has a custom ROM, you could be correct about 
not having sms and email. Press the Home key, select All category and 
see what's there. Messaging is the sms program. Versamail is the email 
program. Web is the browser.
If they are there, you're all set, software-wise. You just need the data 
plan with enough text messages to get you through the month. The $20 
plan gives you unlimited data (all the email and web browsing you can 
handle) and 200 text messages.
