That wouldn't make sense because there is no link between a phone number and a yahoo account. That kind of thing is almost universally stored in cookies, which means it also doesn't make sense that it would happen after a hard reset. If this was a GSM account, SIMM memory might explain it, but you said it was Sprint. I'm thinking that 1) the guy didn't really do a hard reset, even though he thought he did, 2) the issue was with the yahoo url that he was using, or 3) its an "urban legend".
