the battery indicator is not relaible when a new battery is present in the palm.

It takes something like 5 complete discharges (run it to 0%) before the 
indicator is correct and you get its full charge. LithiumIon batteries tend to 
have a greater total lifetime when they are run from battery only and not 
plugged in and being used.

Only plug in for charging is a good idea.
