I haven't been all too excited about the iPhone itself, but really about the
application store, or the "App Store" as Apple is calling it. I'm not ready to
buy an iPhone for a number of reasons, including low capacity, certain UI
features which aren't quite there (cut & paste), the keyboard, and one of the
biggest being that it isn't on any other carrier aside from AT&T, specifically
my carrier, Sprint. Not that I have anything specific against AT&T (I think
all the carriers play shenanigans of one kind or another), nor that I would
have to pay for an early termination fee (I don't since my 2-year contract with
Sprint is just up). No, it's that I have a SERO plan which gives me unlimited
data and 550 minutes of peak time for $30/month. I think something similar
from AT&T for the iPhone is $70, and probably not much less for other phones
(my wife also has a smartphone that she uses unlimited data for - actually it's
my old 700P). So our monthly bills would immediately go up by at least $50 if
not more, and that doesn't count the cost of new phones!

However, as I say, I AM excited about the app store mainly because these apps
(many of them anyway) will work on an iPod Touch, which you do not need to sign
a contract to buy. In fact my wife has one that I got her and I am updating it
as I type with the new firmware, getting excited about playing with a bunch of
these new apps for it. I'm also hoping that Apple comes out with new iPod
Touches in September or October that have a GPS in them as well as an expanded
capacity of 64GB. If they do indeed offer such a device, I'm almost certainly
going to upgrade my own iPod Classic. Then I'll have two devices with both GPS
and Wifi (the other being the about-to-be-offered 800w)! Then all I'll need is
a Kindle as my third wireless device and I'll be all set! ;-)
