Craig,
You seem to know the most about this. Is it definitively true that the Pre is going to back up information over the air to Palm's servers whether the user wants it or not? And/or that, if the user can stop that in full or in part, the user will have no alternative way to backup/sync anywhere else? That might well be a showstopper for me, and I can only imagine the difficulties in the legal, medical, human resources and educational communities with a device that backs up to an uncertified, unknown quantity such as a manufacturer's server. I'm sure Palm runs wonderful servers, but that's not the point. Imagine if Windows required that it all such information be backed up to Microsoft servers, or MacOS to Apple's. There would be a revolt! I myself went through hours of cleanup of my address book before allowing my Treo, then Centro then Blackberry to sync address book and calendar information with my hosted Exchange service. Primary data elements of concern here would be calendar, contacts, tasks and notes - and perhaps SMS/MMS messages. OH, and pictures, voice recordings, shopping lists, and maybe more I haven't thought of. The quasi-public nature of email is already a given, but not those others. Can you further enlighten us? I will be hesitant to activate the thing when I buy it in 6 DAYS unless I understand this better! There is just so much identity theft out there now. Do you think there will be any third-party applications that will address this problem? Frankly, I have more problems with the info being on Google servers than with Palm, but would rather info not be on either one. Then I have a problem because if something happens to the Pre device and I am unable to retrieve that info, I'm screwed.
