My poor brain feels a bit like it did when I first learned about recursive
programming, or accounting, or girls. Very unnatural, until you get the
hang of it!! :-)

So,

I want to use the Pre thusly:

1. My contacts, calendar, tasks, and notes live in Exchange. "He who has
two calendars has none" is my mantra. Multiple contact lists I can sort of
see, sort of.

2. Certainly I have multiple email addresses. Work (hosted Exchange),
personal (ferguson.us - sometimes pointed to Google Apps; sometimes pointed
directly to Exchange along with work email), Yahoo, Gmail, Windows Live, and
some others. And yes, I have Facebook and Twitter, though how/where/if/when
those fit in to the whole Pre thing is beyond even my wonderings at this
point.

So, to continue with the wonderings:

3. I want the Pre to sync Email, contacts, calendar, tasks and notes with
Exchange. I don't know if it will do all 5. The BlackBerry (with BES)
will. The PalmOS Centro/Treo will only do email, contacts and calendar.
That would be OK with me, really, but it's nice to get tasks and notes too.
I don't want those data elements to live anywhere OTHER than Exchange and
the Pre (and, of course, any computers on which I set up Outlook as an
Exchange client).

4. I want the Exchange-hosted data elements to be ON THE PRE, not in the
cloud somewhere. So, when I'm at my place in the mountains where cell
towers do not yet reach, I can look at the email, contacts, calendar, tasks
and notes that were on the Pre before I left radio contact, do things with
them, and then have all that get reconciled with Exchange when once again
I'm electronically tethered to the world.

5. I want the Pre to use the Synergy thingy to pull in Yahoo, Gmail,
Live, Facebook, Twitter, whatever other, less important data elements. That
would be cool. If those somehow don't really exist on the Pre except to
look at while online, I'm OK with that.

So, to digress a moment: does the Pre show me things without actually
bringing them down to the Pre's storage, such that if I'm not online (as
when I'm in the mountains) I can't see them?

Continuing on:

6. I want some way to back up the "other stuff" that's created and/or
modified on the Pre - SMS/MMS threads, pictures, video (eventually), voice
recordings, HandyShopper databases, any other databases, other applications,
data from other applications. My preference would be a verifiable encrypted
space in a cloud somewhere. My second choice would be my computer.

This is pretty much how I use the BB. BES puts all the important data on
the BB. If I want to back up SMS and other settings and databases, I have
to sync with a cable (since hosted Exchange's BES doesn't back this stuff
up).

So, Oh Great Craig, Source of All Pre-Pre knowledge, whadya think??

Holy crap, I have to go read the user manual now! Never saw anyone (other
than me) use Scribd before! Cool!

Cheers,

Don

Just verified that you can turn daily backup OFF entirely (page 178 of
the user manual).
http://www.scribd.com/doc/15851822/SG-Pre-UserGuide

And more (page 20):

"Palm offers the Data Transfer Assistant to do this one-time data
transfer. Use of the Data
Transfer Assistant is a three-step process:
1. Download the Data Transfer Assistant from palm.com/support to your
computer.
2. Connect your phone and your computer using the USB cable, and open
and run the
Data Transfer Assistant on your computer.
3. On your phone, select where you want your transferred data to be
imported:
*** To an online account: You can assign the transferred data to be
imported to one of
your online accounts, such as Google or Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync.
*** To your phone: Transferred data that is imported to your phone
is backed up to your
Palm profile, so you have a copy of it. But you can change this data
in one place
only: your phone. The data is not accessible from any online account."

So, if you choose not to use an online service and sync your data to
your phone only, and then disable daily backup, the only copy of your
data will exist on the phone itself.
