I believe the Pre can be used as a modem with neither Bluetooth nor a cable. Since my past Treos, Centro and Blackberries can all do this, it's something I've come to count on from time to time, and can't do with the Pre! I mentioned Bluetooth specifically since that's how I've always done it.
