...and one of the nice things is if you have "Robert Smith" in your contacts for work but you call him "Bob Smith" in your personal contacts, you can link them as one card on the Pre.

So, to sum up, Synergy "virtually" combines disparate profiles on your device, but doesn't change any of them through the linking process. If you change any data about that person, it changes it in the default record only. I suggest you play a bit with it if you don't fully get all the "what if" scenarios; dummy records are easy to create, edit, and delete once you understand the ramifications of doing different things.
