This is weird. I was trying to find Evernote with OS 1.0.x and was
unsuccessful. So, with nothing else important to do on the device, I
went for the 1.3.5.1 update.
The update complete, I went back to the app catalog -- and was
asked to accept the user terms. I did, but why didn't 1.0 ask for that?
Then I keyed in Evernote, hit Enter, and there it is.
Plus which, the app catalog looks different in 1.3.5 than it did
in 1.0, and it's appearance is what I remember from the first Pre I had,
which probably means I installed the update before looking for EN.
And I'm logged in and everything's dandy.
So, for the next newbie who asks, upgrade the OS before trying to
use the app catalog.
