One problem was steering the tech away from "I don't know anything about
the Pre." But he stuck with it, listened to my experience with other
POPs and with Google's IMAP access, and finally came up with creating a
new email address for me on another server. So now the Pre POPs one
address and Thunderbird the other -- and all messages appear to the user
to be from the original - correct - address.
I may now go back and re-try some IMAP with Google. So far, I'm
underwhelmed. I just haven't used IMAP enough to see its advantage over POP.

OTOH, getting it working did away with the only real deal breaker about
the Pre. I really love the device, but if I couldn't get my work mail on
it ...
Now may have to re-try that virtual keyboard. I have put off
installing anything until I got the POP problem solved. Didn't want to
induce any outside influence.
