When I'm in the Messaging app, I don't have a choice of Conversation View vs. Buddy View. I opened the dropdown menu, and the Preferences, and there's no mention in either one of View options. (Note: The Help does mention these two view options, but I don't seem to have them available.)

When you bring up the SMS/IM app, it defaults to "conversations", but you can always switch over to "buddies" view and/or look someone else up via U. Search and start an SMS conversation that way.
