I think I figured it out. What I did not realize is apparently the CompanionLink is a 2-step process. First connect the USB cable and synchronize to the PRE and then after disconnecting the cable synchronize on the phone itself. CompanionLink does not directly update but, rather, stages the updates. I suppose there is some logic to this in case the USB transfer runs into problems.
