All this talk of portability makes me yearn that much more for a time

(perhaps only 10 or 20 years from now?) where the whole idea will seem

quaint. It's funny how we've gone from a place where everything had to be

nailed down to a very mobile society in a very short period. Even so there

are lots of issues, mostly around powering devices, input, and consumption

(display). The first has been the hardest nut to crack, but I just wonder

as quantum computers come in and we can just wear our devices without

noticing them, will our simple movements (in addition possibly to some

solar/photo-power) be enough to power such small circuits? Display seems to

be the most promising since we've made so many strides in this area.

Flexible screens and even retinal projection may do away with any

limitations in this area. The input might still be a challege. Sure you

can where gloves and "air-type" on a virtual keyboard of some sort, but it

will be a tough transition. People will not want to do voice

commands/transcribing for privacy reasons, but maybe the jaw-movement

detectors will eventually become good enough where you can mouth your

commands inaudibly and your device will pick it up. Won't it be interesting

watching people walk down the streat mouthing stuff with their eyes glazed

over watching something only they can see via a heads-up display in their

glasses (or just "painted" directly on their retinas)? This stuff will

sound quaint indeed! :)
