Personally, Jim, I think it wouldn't help much at all. I think the main reason the Touch has done well is that a lot of people won't or can't switch to AT&T for their cell service, so having a Touch allows them to have an iPhone minus the phone part and not have to worry about contracts. But the Pre is now available for two carriers in the US and will soon be at least one more (AT&T), with the fourth and final one (Tmobile) being planned to roll out sooner or later. I just don't see people wanting a second network device (if they already have an smartphone). If they don't have a smartphone, then this will compete with the iTouch and the iPad. And unlike for the phone where they have all the carriers to market and sell their devices (ok, so they've done a horrible job of it!), they would be on their own, mainly trying to get places like Best Buy, Costco, Walmart, etc., sell it. If they could get the price down enough and get these companies to fund a lot of the marketing, who knows, but to me it's pretty risky. My sense is that given Palm's financial situation, it needs to be very cautious and focused about where it puts it's resources. It needs to build up the Palm Pre brand and reputation as much as it can, maybe even license WebOS to some 3rd parties who build an iTouch/iPad-like device, but not do it themselves. That's my $.02 anyway...
