Exactly.  I use AnyDVD (bought it on sale...they have those every so
often, mostly around holidays) and then use a variety of free
ripping/transcoding tools (e.g., Handbrake).  AnyDVD is only required
if you're (ahem) backing up your legally owned DVDs (cough).
