If you don't have Uberkernal installed, than what kernal are you running?
If you are running "Super Kernal" you probably should doctor your phone and
start over with Uberkernal. Super Kernal makes modifications to some files
in a way that is supposed to be more risky as I recall. As far as the
kernals above 800mhz (used through Uberkernal), I believe you need to get
them through the custom kernal testing feeds that you have to add to
preware. Not a big deal, but it prevents more casual users from installing
them. Actually from what I recall, they now have a 1.2Ghz kernal. The one
thing that I learned the hard way (after a bunch of crashes) is that the
best settings involve not letting the processor dip below 500mhz. So I
normally keep it on Screenstate with 500mhz as the lowest and 800 or 1000mhz
as the top (depending on if I have the higher kernals installed). Things
generally run pretty well at 1000mhz, but I've kept it at the "standard" 800
for the last month or so in anticipation of 1.4.5. I guess I shouldn't have
bothered since that update is seemingly taking forever! At 1Ghz, from what I
recall when I had it installed, things ran very smooth, although even with
that occasionally things would lag. I think part of that is due to the
lower amount of RAM in the Sprint Pre. Also, I think that things are
supposed to improve a lot when WebOS comes with the newer version of the JS
engine that's starting to be used in some browsers, as well as some of the
newer technologies like CSS Transforms and WebGL, but not sure when those
will be supported - maybe when WebOS 2.0 comes out in the Fall?

Anyway, to answer your question, obviously its up to you, but if you have
the time to mess with your Pre and install these faster kernals, they are
probably worth it. They may depleat your battery a bit faster, but with
screenstate on, hopefully not that much, and you can always clock down if
you are starting to get low. In the same vein, I would seriously recommend
an extended battery for the Pre. I got the Seidio innocase 2600mah battery
a month or so ago, and it has changed my experience with the phone possibly
more than anything else. It's so nice just not to have to worry about
battery life for hours and hours at a time. I can generally get at least 13
hours of moderate use out of it, which may seem like not that much, but
really if you supplement it just a bit with charging here and there it means
you can go from the time you wake up to the time you go to sleep...
