While close to hang up seems a logical counterpart to open to answer, I'd rather actually not have to keep my phone open for a conversation, aside from which I think you aren't very likely to slide the phone open and answer someone by MISTAKE, whereas I could easily see myself sliding it closed and accidentally hanging up on someone, which is something you really want to try to avoid at all costs! :)
