Thanks for the lead. Not sure quite how but I finally managed it by 
downloading a later version of WebOSQuickInstall.jar and then trying the 
PreWare download (failed) and PreWare (already on my hard drive) which 
succeeded!

Since then I have managed to update PreWare from within it! (Almost 
incestuous!) and all is feeling much faster/better.
