Caps can help with ESD, but I'd suggest using purpose-made TVS (Transient Voltage Suppression) devices, which are usually more like diodes than capacitors.

Selecting appropriate TVS diodes is a whole deep-dive itself that I readily admit I don't fully understand...I generally go with whatever application notes suggest. A basic rule of thumb is to pick one with a breakdown voltage slightly higher than the positive rail of your power supply, but lower than the maximum input voltages of the components involved. That maximum is often Vdd + 0.5V, but read your datasheets.

For anyone interested, i hacked something together with EasyEDA that is at least orderable :)  Maybe with what i learned there i will try the same thing in KiCAD. I need to add a few things like a thumbwheel pot, and Trampas said to be more robust it would need more ESD protection capacitors, although i assume the connected boards have their own. (project page <https://oshwlab.com/1101010/dial-a-memory>) (editor link <https://easyeda.com/editor#project_id=a0fdd1ab2910489d9e08face61b8356d>)

If anyone wants to tell me how wrong i've done it, i'd be open to hearing that. :)

Does anyone know if i'm supposed to update the design drawings on the project page manually?  Right now they show as blank, but captioned with the names of the sheets in the project so it's confusing.

    Hi everyone,
I have a need for a custom board and don't really get excited about
board design as a skill to acquire. I previously tried KiCad and was
a bit overwhelmed. Are there any other options out there that are a
little more approachable for a one-off project? It is really simple,
just connecting a Teensy with two module boards, a USB-c socket, an
RJ11, a POT, and a few passives and I plan to hand-solder everything
    together.
    Thanks!
