you just mentioned the magic - overcoming hardware variations.  therein lies
the art.  scripted installations rule, and images blow.

unfortunately, kickstart only applies to linux.  i still have the majority
of clients that use winders on the desktop.

for servers, me thinks you've got the best method available.
