As a very recent gentoo convert, the only challenge I have found with gentoo
is finding the time for compilation. All my hardware was autodetected by the
bootable Live CD and I can not say enough good things about 'emerge' and it's
dependency handling - very intuitive and streets ahead of rpm/urpmi (never
managed to get Debian installed, so can't comment on apt-get).
