I'm not sure why, but with my install of GNOME 2.4 on Debian unstable,
I do not have a 'known applications' menu. It is something like:

[ ]
[ gears] [_________________] |>
[ ] [x] run in terminal [Run with file]

[Help] [Cancel] [Run]

The triangle to the right of the command box has the most recently
typed commands.

Which version of GNOME are you using?
