if you want to save a few bucks get a used/refurb ibm thinkpad, preferably a T20/21/22. they have excellent linux support, some even had linux preinstalled. several online stores sell them, mail me privately if you want links. the newer T30/40 models are damn nice, but rather expensive. my R40 has been great, but it did come with winxp (which i never activated, i booted a linux CD on the initial powerup and never looked back).
