Many sound cards have no protection for input (and output) over voltages. When a large signal hit the input circuits, they suffered badly.
The newer, higher quality cards probably protect against this problem. A circuit for Speaker Measurements here ( http://www.gti.net/wallin/audio/audua/audua.html ) has added protection to save the sound card. ( notice the protection diodes on the "Jig Schematic").
