I've got a problem with the volume control taskbar applet in FC3/Gnome 2.8. I've got the EMU10K1 drivers installed, they work with my audigy, and I can adjust the volume correctly in alsamixer. However, the volume control always shows the volume as being off, not muted, just completely silent. Trying to change it doesn't work, as it immediately reverts to the lowest setting (not that any of this actually changes the *actual* volume.

If you haven't tried these already, I'd go with /dev/dsp

or /dev/sound/dsp.

I tried those: they made noise, but it was really loud and distorted. I also tried "dsp1", which was really quiet, but still distorted. Hmmmm....
