I just got an IBM T42 (not the p unfortunately so I have XGA instead

The p doesn't indicate anything about screen resolution. I have a T40 with SXGA. The p means it uses a firegl instead of a radeon and has a faster hard drive. There may be other differences, but the screen isn't one of them. You can get both p and non-p models (sounds like a famous math problem) with any type of screen.
