any proposals from folks familiar with the tasks at hand?

I was talking to a guy from LinuxCare (used to be a big company in the days of the bubble) at OLS. They're doing the same thing with school buses, so the school/parents know where the kids/buses are in real time. Each kid has a card (rfid?) that they wave at a reader as they get on/off.

The bus sends back data every minute or so (cell phone?) telling the school where it is and giving an inventory of kids.

They also have a cam on board taking shots 15/sec showing
that a kid really did get on and off and which will transmit
in real time (driver presses a button) if there's some sort
of altercation on board (kids get rowdy, hijacking).
