man smb.conf and search for variable substitution. It shows all the possibilities...maybe your version doesn't support the capitol U? You said that users are authing to the AD...the computers they are using, are they on the domain and do the users log on to those machines with a username/password? I'm just trying to think of off the wall things that could cause this to not work.
