perhaps i didn't explain. a regular distro doesn't make special provisions to accomodate frequently written files (like in /var) which will eventually kill flash memory. and live distros aren't generally designed to have services and other system configs tweaked to run a specific way, at least not that i'm aware. what i need is something that can be easily configured like a regular distro but runs more or less read only like a live distro, perhaps with /var mounted in a ramdisk or something.

You should be able to fit a debian server easily inside a 512mb USB key.

i just ordered an inexpensive 1u server w/ 4x sata slots to be used as a
backup storage server. assuming it will boot from a usb device i'd like to set it up to boot linux via a smallish thumb drive, then create a four disk software raid device, mount it as /archive, and make it available via samba,
nfs, and sshfs.

has anyone ever done a setup like this before, or have a suggestion for
setting up the usb OS?
