So what ports do you need in a cable box? The IR port is the same one that your remote uses, so it's difficult to turn that one off. As for the other ports (USB, for example), they were always 'next gen' and I've never really heard what they were supposed to be for, anyway. So frankly, it's not that they've disabled any ports, it's just that they haven't made use of some of the ones that the vendors are throwing in there far ahead of any major cable company being able to make use of them.
