So what ports do you need in a cable box?  The IR port is the same one that
your remote uses, so it's difficult to turn that one off.  As for the other
ports (USB, for example), they were always 'next gen' and I've never really
heard what they were supposed to be for, anyway.  So frankly, it's not that
they've disabled any ports, it's just that they haven't made use of some of
the ones that the vendors are throwing in there far ahead of any major cable
company being able to make use of them.

I've done this in the past, but all I have is basic cable.  If you want
the digital channels you would probably need to do what Tivo and the
like do, which is to connect your video capture card to the output of
your digital cable box, and use an infrared sender to allow MythTV to
control the digital cable box.
