Based on the log, the error was from the vmware package's preinstall 
scriptlet.  It isn't actually a problem with rpm at all - thus the various 
suggestions to remove the _db.00N files, rebuild the rpm database, etc., 
will be of no help.

While it's too late now, if this happens again I would recommend the
"--noscripts" option to "rpm -e"  which should bypass the failing
preinstall script, but hopefully allow full removal of the package files.
