It's been a while since I've tried to wrestle with PCMCIA on trinux
but if you want my 2c.... I would guess it's because the 6 releases
use a bigger newer kernel and that support may have had to be 
compiled out of the kernel, but I'm guessing here.

The catch-22 is that the older PCMCIA packages are not as useful 
as the newest ones that do a little better at wrestling with the variety of 
cards, controllers, card-bus/non-cardbus issues that you find in a
laptop environment where the architecture is not as homogenized.
Even bringing up a Linux or BSD distribution on PCMCIA can
be an adventure in driverland.

That said, I don't want ot discourage anyone from doing it, and
I think it would be nice to see reports of successes and or failures
(or even better walkthroughs of procedures and steps taken....).
My main point is that using the latest PCMCIA dist is probably
a good idea.
