I have a similar issue when I install Trisquel for the first time. All I do  
is install Resolution Switcher, it's in Add/Remove Applications, (search for  
Resolution). In the notification area a screen symbol appears. I click the  
symbol and select the correct resolution from the list. In my case 1440 x 900  
widescreen. I'm not sure this will work for you, but its worth a try.
