I mentioned this in another thread, but have you ever taken a look at the  
Software Manager (mintinstall) for Ubuntu based Linux Mint distros? The  
source directory is at http://packages.linuxmint.com/pool/main/m/mintinstall/  
and if you were to us or fork it, that would be another option.
