http://lists.nongnu.org/archive/html/gnu-linux-libre/2011-08/msg00014.html shows that the Firefox problem (probably the same is with Thunderbird) is both a trademark issue and a software freedom issue. Software is free if trademarks, copyright, patents, source availability, possibility of installing a modified version, etc don't make it nonfree.
