There was no decision to be made. I was merely seeking confirmation of my gut
for future projects. As an example we have a plug-in for firefox that
blacklists sites like Netflix and redirects the user to other alternatives.
Right now the page we redirect to lists numerous sites. This doesn't solve
the freedom issue. It only works around the issue for non-free GNU/Linux
distributions. While some of the links very well could be drm free they
require Adobe Flash and I seriously doubt any work in Trisquel.
Some of the obvious solutions which work for tech savvy users won't work for
us (for obvious reasons).
I think ideally we would love to do is develop a Netflix equivalent for
GNU/Linux (well- and other free operating systems). At the moment there isn't
a chance that could happen for numerous reasons. One being the content
industry's insistence on unreasonable licensing conditions (mostly digital
restrictions) and the law.
This isn't to say I think it would be impossible to do. You would probably
have to take the industry on in creative ways. It would probably involve
finding a workable business model to fund new high quality content. I can't
conceive of this working without a significant investment although that
doesn't mean a user driven contributory model wouldn't work.
