As for the battery indicator, it works in Gnome Shell, which is installed by default. If your video card allows it, you can switch to it by simply selecting "GNOME" at the login screen. If I remember well, I activated and then deactivated the screen reader. Then,
the Synaptic package manager could be run without crashing.
