If I remember well, I activated and then deactivated the screen reader. Then,  
the Synaptic package manager could be run without crashing.

As for the battery indicator, it works in Gnome Shell, which is installed by  
default. If your video card allows it, you can switch to it by simply  
selecting "GNOME" at the login screen. To become efficient with GNOME Shell,  
one definitely needs to read this page. And do not miss the to ability to
