Why not simply using the "Update Manager" (in the "System/Administration"  
menu)?

To decide whether to update, a relevant consideration is the availability of  
3D acceleration for you. If so, you can use GNOME Shell, which I consider an  
improvement (but, as I have already written on this forum, this page is to be  
read to be efficient with it). I cannot really talk about the 2D fallback.
