That should work, though, I've found that a clean install of newly-released Ubuntu-like distros seems to go more quickly and without problems. If you wish to do an in-place upgrade, you can do

sudo update-manager -d

or

sudo do-release-upgrade

in the terminal. The script takes care of updating the sources list and upgrading your installed packages.
