I have a working wireless connection. I can reach the internet on it using
Abrowser.
To get the wireless to work, I needed to set up a proxy. Thanks to malbert, I
was able to do this by installing proxydriver:

Apparently, you cannot configure proxys in trisquel 5.5 with the default
installation. (I think that proxydriver ought to be automatically included in
future releases of trisquel.)
Anyway, my problem is that thought I can reach web pages on wireless, I
cannot reach freenode on irc. I have edited the connection in pidgin and
tried the different possibilities for proxy settings, entering the ip
address, username and password and trying socks4 socks5 html and so on. It
didn't work.
I also tried using xchat and chatzilla - they couldn't reach freenode either.
What should I do? I can use freenode if i connect using mobile broadband
using pidgin and xchat...
