The "default applications" are executables to be called in some circumstances  
(say "clicking on a "mailto" link in your case). GMail is not an executable.  
It is a Web site and I doubt you can set the default mailer to "abrowser  
http://gmail.com"; either. If it works, a new message will not be opened and  
the recipient address be automatically set.
