Notice that, nowadays, virtually all "normal" computers (I am not talking about smartphones!) can boot a USB device. You may need to specify the boot order in the BIOS or in the UEFI so that the computer tries to boot on the USB device before trying to boot on the hard disk. Notice also that Trisquel runs on virtually all "normal" computer. You may not have the Wifi card or the 3D acceleration working though.
Well, I actually believe the method works for a USB disk as it works for a
USB stick. I have never tried though. The system installed in this way can be
persistent (i.e., your changes/files actually stay on the device so that you
have them the next time you use it).
