If you have booted from an installation CD you can start the normal  
installation. When it gets to the question about which drive to use select  
the USB disk. That normally works.

When your system starts up there is usually a key that brings up the boot  
menu. This is usually one of the F1 to F12 keys. Most frequently F12, F10, or  
F2.
