I am neutral to the shell as a desktop. It does, however, require 3D  
acceleration to function, which is not available for many of our users.

On a second hand, the Gnome team dropped the fallback code for the 3.8 series  
and as such they won't maintain it anymore. That is why a forked was needed.  
Yeah there is MATE, but it is forked from Gnome 2 and not 3. Now it boils  
down to personal preference.
