I'm sure this is a stupid question, but I don't know how to open synaptic, it  
immediately closes itself.  Typing "synaptic" from the root terminal gives  
the error:

terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::out_of_range'
  what():  vector::_M_range_check
Aborted
